Chapter 1 initially appears with Jonah as a type of Adam whose fall brought condemnation on himself and all his seed in him. In this part of the text however, the mariners are a type of the elect remnant seed chosen by God and given to Christ. Jonah appears a type of Christ who willingly gives his life to deliver those God gave to him in the ship. Unlike the earlier works of the mariners in vs 5 we see a work of grace begun in these men (vs 10). But they must learn that Christ alone saves. They cannot avoid the bloody cross and they cannot help Christ in any way. Christ and Christ alone must save and these men are taught this, just as all God's children are taught.
