Some fights are worth fighting! Commemorating the attacks on 9-11, we are reminded that we are at war with radical Islamic terrorists who are intent on destroying our way of life and bringing us into slavery under Sharia law. The stakes indeed are high. Our very freedom is at stake. It's a fight worth fighting. So is Paul's defense of his ministry and the message that he preached, for at stake is the very truth of the Gospel. Paul stands up to the false teachers and even to Peter and the other Jews to defend the truth that salvation is by God's grace through faith and not by keeping the law of God. A gentile does not have to become a Jew first in order to become a Christian. In defending the 'Gospel Truth" to Peter and the rest, Paul first reminds Peter of truth he already knows and that is a person is declared to be just in God's sight on the basis of their faith, not law keeping. He then appeals to personal experience: Peter, how were you saved? Were you saved by keeping the law or by faith in Christ/ And then finally, Paul recounts David's experience from Psalm 143 as biblical proof that salvation has always been by God's grace through faith apart from law keeping. A man or woman is declared to be free from the penalty of sin and death only one way: Through faith in God in the Old Testament, and through faith in Jesus Christ, God's Son, in the New. The gospel truth is that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ!
