Our clothing communicates something about us doesn't it? Our conscience choices on what to wear is influenced by the things that are important to us. Historically, the robe has been the uniform of preachers. Only preachers who were duly ordained and installed were allowed to wear a rob. The robe quickly identifies not only who I am, but also what I am doing. I am speaking as one commissioned by God to speak God's Word to you. Clothing is important. In our passage, Paul once again uses the language of clothing to describe and define how a Christian should act toward one another. What is this new self that we have "put on?" What is the new self that is to be presented to others? "Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and covetousness, which is idolatry. You must put then all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth."
