The false teachers were coming. They would be saying that they themselves spoke for God. Peter anticipates they will relegate His and the apostles teaching to "cleverly devised tales." For the church to be prepared against this, Peter reminds the believers why they can trust his testimony and the OT word of God. He and the Apostles were eyewitnesses (even ear-witnesses) at Jesus’ transfiguration; Jesus was shown to be God by the glory upon him and the word from heaven; By this Peter also equates his and the apostle’s words (the NT) with the OT scripture. The apostle’s were teaching none other than the very word of God. The Apostles wrote not their own minds, or tales of men, but these are "the Lord’s commands" (cf. ch. 3:2). You can trust it! And you do well to listen to it as "a light shining in a dark place," for your salvation and protection from false teachers.
