In dealing with the hyper-Calvinistic version of ‘the seeking sinner’, I will be mainly, but not exclusively, drawing on Gospel Standard Strict Baptists who make a virtue of ‘the seeking sinner’, going so far as to call him ‘blessed’. Let us remind ourselves of what we are talking about. In hyper-Calvinistic terms, a sensible or seeking sinner is a regenerate sinner who, conscious of his sin and need of salvation, repents, and desires a manifestation that he has been eternally justified in Christ. He is not trusting Christ, however.77 Even so, such a sinner is demonstrating that he must be elect. Convinced that such a sinner (commonly) exists, his preachers constantly assure him that he is ‘blessed’. |
