The Law defines & explains sin in its many forms along with its natural and inescapable consequences for DOING what is forbidden as well as NOT DOING that which is commanded. Sins of Commission and Sins of Omission… sins of the flesh, sins of the mind and sins of the tongue. To think speak or do any of the 900 + things forbidden by the Law is sin; even as not thinking, speaking or doing what is commanded by the Law is sin! James 4:17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. According to Rom 14:23b “Whatever is not of faith is sin.” Therefore attempting to be justified by the Law or approved by performance of it IS SIN, because… Galatians 3:12 “ the Law is not of faith;” Rather the Law is the MANUAL FOR MISSING THE MARK (sin is an archery term which means missing the mark) or “THE HAMARTIA (Greek for SIN) HANDBOOK” Not only does the Law forbid evil thinking, speaking and doing but equally it requires Holy thinking, speaking and doing. Not only does the Law forbid hating your neighbor but equally requires loving your neighbor and doing good to him as you would for yourself. Not only does the Law forbid one from so much as taking the Lord's name in vain but equally requires that one to love and prefer Him supremely with all that is within Him! The Law requires nothing less than perfection. Perfection is the standard of the Law. Where imperfect man is concerned it is an impossible standard… the perfection of God himself. Though it is altogether pure and perfect righteousness …it is too hard, too high, too heavy and too holy for fallen man…and therefore can neither justify nor sanctify him. It can only make him sin!
