The last time we were here in this text, we watched as Jesus did something absolutely marvelous. He gave grace to an undeserving sinner. As common as this seems in our lives, we must never lose sight of the wonder of God's mercy as Jesus extends to us the grace of salvation! When we began our study in John 5, we wrestled with the question, "Why did John (and the Holy Spirit of God who directed him) choose to put this account in his book?" We settled on the idea that John, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, wrote this for two reasons. (1) First, he recorded it to illustrate how God's grace works. (2) Second, he put it here to set the scene for the discussion that followed with the powers that be. Today, we will wade head first into this discourse. I. The Issue (v. 16-18) II.
