We believe that God has given us Ten Commandments and that each one summarizes God's will in an important area of life. They are all necessary and we ignore any of them to our detriment.
But they don't always seem equally relevant to us. If someone gave you a list of the commandments and asked you to number them in the order in which you most regularly struggle, which would be at the bottom of the list? Might it be the sixth commandment? Are any of us at risk of committing murder?
Maybe the best way to answer that question is to recognize that murder begins in the heart before it is committed by the hands. Everyone who is angry with his brother" is judged by the same law as a murderer (Matt. 5:22). All of us have more in common with the murderers in the news headlines than we would like to admit. James says to us: "you murder and covet and cannot obtain" (4:2). We need the sixth commandment more than we know.
