Most cults either subtract from or add to the gospel of salvation by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ. They usually add human works to the equation-- that we must do something either to be saved or to keep our salvation to the end. We tend to think that this teaching is a 19th, 20th, or 21st century phenomena, but this perversion of the gospel can trace its roots back to first century Christianity. Right from the beginning of the church, man perverts the gospel of Jesus Christ! Paul encounters this in the churches of Galatia. He wonders how quickly and easily they could desert the truth, not just perverting the gospel, but also leaving God behind. To embrace legalism means to reject God. Anything added to grace destroys grace. The gospel is only good news if it is free. The minute one adds works to the equation, it ceases to be 'good new' but is now 'bad news' because we cannot maintain a right relationship with God by our own efforts. Now Satan, our adversary, seeks to destroy the church by perverting the gospel. He does so through false teachers who sow doubt and then add to what God has said in His word. Salvation by grace through faith plus anything is a perversion of the gospel. Such false teachers Paul condemns in the harshest of terms. They deserve God's judgment for false teaching and leading people astray. For us, to keep from becoming a spiritual casualty, we must first know the truth of God's Word, and secondly, be careful who or what we entertain in our homes. Don't let the false teachers and teaching into our homes so as to safeguard from spiritual desertion.
