Love Story was an extremely important book when I was young. Eric Segal defined love in the book as, “Love means you never have to say you’re sorry.” While this phrase hit a chord in the early seventies, it is clearly untrue. Any married person will tell you that love means saying you are sorry many times. The Apostle John wrote often about love in this epistle. Here in our text, he defines the love he defined the love he wrote about. 1 John 3:16 says, “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
