When was the last time you had a confrontational conversation with someone? For most of us, whether on the giving or receiving end, confrontations are uncomfortable. Our blood pressure rises. Our breathing quickens. Our palms sweat.
It is a special gift when confrontations end happily. A good word at the end of a confrontation is refreshing, like a cool drink on a hot day.
Inspired by the Spirit Paul wrote Titus and the Cretan church a confrontational letter. The letter exhorts, rebukes, criticizes, instructs, and warns. But the letter ends on the good note of a farewell blessing or benediction, which is Latin for "good word."
To appreciate God's good word let's do three things. Let's examine the biblical background of the benediction. Let's understand Titus 3:15 in context as we wrap up our exposition of this letter. And let's learn why benedictions like this one are essential in our worship service.
