Most folks spend half their waking hours working. To a large extent who we are is closely related to how we work. And the way we work says something about us, and about our religion, and our God.
A poor vocational ethic detracts from the gospel and gives believers and their God a bad reputation. Here's the problem: Only about half of self-identified believers say that Christians should "do excellent work in an effort to bring glory to God (58%)." And even among those who believe the gospel should shape how we work, it's one thing to think it and another to do it. So God teaches us how to work to his glory.
As we'll see bondservants are quite different from workers in today's economy. But since God is speaking to those who are bound—in one way or another—to the service of another, God has much to say to us in this text about how to work well.
