Paul exhorts the Philippians to know and show joy that is enduring and resilient. Such joy must be "in the Lord" if it is to have such a character, rooted not in ourselves or in the world, but in God himself, even more than in his mercies in themselves. So we can consider God in his person, in his attributes, in his works, and in his relations, as the foundation of the joy which we possess and express.
