As the Savior comes closer and closer to His atoning sacrifice on the cross, more and more of the Father's purpose and decree is revealed to His disciples and to all those who heard His words. Sometimes we forget that those who followed Him around Jerusalem during the final week of His earthly ministry did not have the revelation we have now and this is, in part, why they often misunderstood His meaning and often did not grasp the significance of the revelation. Sometimes, that misunderstanding was an honest attempt to reconcile doctrine they had never heard; sometimes it was due to hardness of heart; sometimes it was because the Lord sought to conceal rather than reveal the truth. We see examples of all these things in today's text and the verses following. In today's text we see the Lord reveal (again) that He must die on the cross, but the people who had just declared Him to be their King and the fulfillment of their ancient hopes do not understand. They knew their Torah and the Prophets. Rightly they question how, if He is truly their Messiah, He cannot inaugurate an eternal Kingdom and reign over it. They do not understand that He supplies the answer. The Savior's death and resurrection ushered in an age beyond their comprehension. Indeed, they would be the mysterious means of that inauguration by rejecting Him and demanding His death. – Pastor Schlegel
