Elders have a high calling. They must oversee God's people to faithful maturity. Without spiritual oversight we are more vulnerable moral complacency and backsliding. But elders won't properly manage the church if they aren't qualified. Before an elder can be a moral pace setter his own life must first be ordered. To rightly wield the sword of Scripture in the congregation it must be working reformation in his own life.
So this sermon is an invitation for current and potential elders to examine themselves, to repent of shortcomings and pledge greater faithfulness with the Spirit's help.
It is also a message for all church members. First, these qualifications help us know who to nominate and confirm to the Consistory. By voting we share a responsibility in the church's spiritual health. Second, the traits of qualified elders are the same marks of godliness we all must pursue. This sermon should help us do Philippians 3:17. "Keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have" in your spiritual leaders.
There are three main categories or three spheres in which elders must practice an well-ordered life.
