One of the hardest things we are called upon to do in life is to forgive someone who has sinned against us, who has hurt us deeply, or who has abused us in some way. It is hard because of what is involved in forgiveness. Forgiveness is a gift; it can never be earned. It involves letting go of one's grip on the offense and dismissing it from one's mind. When one truly forgives another, they promise not to bring up the matter again to them, not share the matter with others, and not dwell on the offense themselves. It takes a great, good, and gracious person to forgive. And in the same vein it takes great God, a good God, and a gracious God to forgive us! in the longest prayer recorded in Scripture, the Levites lead the people in worship of God! They begin with exalting God's greatness as the creator of everything, the source and sustainer of life, and the object of worship in heaven! They then historically recall God's goodness to Israel from the founding of the nation to the foundering of it. Even though the Israelites benefited from God's goodness, yet they remained stiff necked and rebellious. God showed Himself to be ready to pardon, gracious, compassionate, slow to anger. God not only forgives them; He forbears by postponing judgment. At the end, the Levites appeal to God's graciousness admitting that they had sinned and that God was just in His judgment on them. Implied in it all is simply this: God be merciful to us! Be gracious! Forgive! For indeed, He is the God who Forgives!!
