In every spiritual revival, two major thrusts have always appeared. First, there has always been the proclamation of the Word of God; and secondly, the mobilization of God's people. But for true revival to take place, we must deal with the underlying sin or sins that have pulled us away from God. The people in Nehemiah's time called for a special service of confession--a spontaneous, solemn occasion. At this meeting they not only confessed their own sins, but also the sins of their ancestors. For while they were not personally responsible for what their ancestors did, yet they were reaping the consequence of their sinful actions. Now when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse from all unrighteousness. But confession leads to a greater hunger to know more of God's Word. Which in turn leads to conviction of more sin, confession, and then increased hunger to hear God's Word. It leads to the cycle of progressive sanctification in which God, little by little, reveals to us our sin. We confess. God forgives. He uncovers more of our sin which leads to more confession and ultimately spiritual growth as we are changed little by little into Christ's likeness. The final result is genuine, heart-felt worship of God! This cycle of hearing God's Word-conviction- repentance-doing God's Word should be the norm for us as believers in Christ! This is how we grow up in Christ.
