“If only Jesus would show His power, you would think that people would throng to him. Are you ever tempted to think that today? We have the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but if only He would do something miraculous … If only He would do a sign.
"No. You're putting way too much confidence in signs, and you're putting way too much confidence in people to react rightly to signs.
"Jesus did a sign in this passage, and even the healed man said, ‘Never in human history has something like this happened.' Yet the response was not repentance. The response was aggravation and debate and backroom discussions.
"I realize this is not the most encouraging topic for us; I would much rather talk about Jesus, and the mud, and how He saves, and His power. But it's interesting that in this passage, after recording the miracle, John spends most of the chapter talking about false teachers . . .
