Simon the Pharisee invites Jesus to dine in his home but omits the common courtesies accorded to honored dinner guests. Customarily guests' sandals are removed, and their feet are washed to remove the street's dust and refresh them. Jesus' feet are left embarrassingly dirty. Dinner guests are also anointed with a touch of olive oil. But there is no such kindness for Jesus.
But when a woman who appears to be in a state of emotional breakdown emerges from the shadows and silently stands at the feet of Jesus, everything stands still. To the shock of the guests and the onlookers, the poor woman begins to anoint the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her long hair while kissing them. This disruption annoys the host. When we have difficulty showing love for Christ it is because we are yet to realize how great He is and sinful we are, and that we are in need of His forgiveness.
