Hebrews 2.17 describes the nature the Son of God took and the need the Son of God met in order to save his brothers from their sins and deliver them from the fear of death.
He had to be made in all things like his brothers - he had to share their nature and assume their condition, sin excepted. He had to enter fully into their humanity in all its dimensions and expressions.
As such, he could serve as a merciful and faithful High Priest in the things that have to do with God, representing us because identifying with us. This priestly work reached its pinnacle at the cross, where Jesus took upon himself the wrath of God in order to save his people from their sins.
We need to be reminded that the incarnation, then, is not the end, but a means to the end: it lays the foundation of salvation, but that salvation is not accomplished until the Word who became flesh laid down his life for us.
