In these final words (through verse 33) of instruction and comfort of the disciples before His arrest, torture, and execution, the Savior further reveals the nature of what the disciples will be required to endure and the unexpected nature of their relationship with Him going forward. The lives of the disciples will be a bittersweet one. The Master who they have followed and lived with for years will depart from their sight, hearing, and touch, and the glorious restoration they all expect will be only partially fulfilled now and in a way which emphasizes the mystery of God's power and wisdom as we read of in I Corinthians 1:18 – 31. In the world, they will have tribulation, but He will overcome the world as He will tell them in verse 33. What they experienced is what you and I experience. The life of the Christian is lived in hope and the light of the promise of fulfillment. He is absent in body, but present in the Holy Spirit; there will be sorrow, but that sorrow will be turned to joy; we will greatly desire the thing hoped for and when He returns, we will receive it all. – Pastor Schlegel
