1) The Plan: Acts 15:36 a) Paul ready to take his 2nd missionary trip. b) Paul and Barnabus split up over the question of John Mark. c) Barnabus took John Mark to the island of Cyprus. 2) The Place: Philippi a) Some details of the geography of Philippi b) Alexander the Great named Philippi after his father, Philip the Second. c) Great battle took place there between the Romans and the Greeks, and many of the Roman soldiers stayed and settled after the battle. d) Most of the Jailors were Romans Army Officers that retired in Philippi. e) Philippi was a very special Roman colony: 3) The Prayer Meeting: Paul, Silas and Company found themselves in Philippi on the Sabbath. a) Paul is Jewish. b) Friday night at Sunset is the time of worship. c) When the Jewish people left Babylon, they brought with them the building of houses of worship called Synagogues d) It took at least 10 Jewish men to establish a Synagogue. e) If there were not at least 10 men, the Talmud taught that they had to meet outside under the blue sky by running water, a river. f) It was Saturday, and Paul knew that if there were Jewish people in the area, they would be down by the riverside for prayer. g) Paul's robe would have made it clear that Paul was a teacher 4) The Person: a woman named Lydia. (verse 14) a) She worshipped God b) “Her heart the Lord opened.” c) What she did after she was saved.
