To think on the Father not showing mercy for His beloved only begotten Son for sinners is to see in the sacrament not just the love of the Son of God, but the love of the Father in not showing mercy to His Son that we who believe would have mercy, and to have that love shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
