In 1 Peter 2:13, believers are admonished to "submit to every ordinance of man." In essence, we are told to obey earthly governmental authorities, regardless of the form or character of the government, because ALL governments are raised up and given power by God. Paul substantiates this command in Romans 13, calling government officials "ministers of God." So this command does not exempt us from obeying even corrupt governments. After all, both Peter and Paul were writing these words while under the rule of Roman Emperors, specifically Nero, who was about as corrupt as can be. The ONLY exception that would justify civil disobedience is if the government mandates that we do something that violates a clear command of God, and even then the occasions are rare and should only be entered into after much prayer and seeking God's Word. Why is this important? First of all, because it is God's will. Secondly, because people are watching, and it is through our submission and obedience to government authority that we are able to "silence the ignorance of foolish men." |
