Throughout the book of Hebrews there are constant comparisons to the Old Mosaic Covenant that God made with Israel and the New Covenant that God made through Jesus Christ with Jew and Gentile believers. Jesus is the fulfillment of the High Priestly position and the High Priestly role. Now, the author continues that comparison. First, he states how a High Priest comes to be. God chooses and appoints him. Second, he states that the purpose is of a High Priest "to act on behalf of men in relation to God." Third, he gives the exact job description of a High Priest, "to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins." There is only one way to be rightly represented to God, and it is through His chosen, appointed, perfect, and eternal Great High Priest: Jesus Christ.
