The discussion in church history has assumed the reality of the presence of Christ at the Supper. The debate concerns how Christ is present. We enter upon mysterious & holy ground. If we have fellowship with Jesus' body & blood (1 Cor 10:16) we need to be clear as to what Scripture says regarding the physical location of Jesus: He is risen, ascended & exalted upon the throne of God. In the Word, the Spirit illuminates & reveals the exalted Jesus: the Lamb upon the throne. How does a worshipper respond to being given a Lamb which stands having been slain? He responds by eating that sacrificial meal! We often think of Christ as present with us in the location of our gathering - true enough, He is present with us in the person of His Spirit. But His Spirit also enables us to commune with Him in the glory of His exaltation so that we are, in spiritual union with Him, present with Him to have fellowship with His body & blood in heaven as the Lamb of God.
