Moses commands Israel to make use of this solemn ritual to impress upon themselves the seriousness of what they are doing. Perhaps it was the nonchalance of the first generation and their resulting death that led Moses to command this ceremony after they entered the Promised Land. We cannot, however, lose sight of the reality that God is making this covenant with the second generation. In the new covenant, we are brought into covenant with God in Jesus Christ our Mediator. This means that we continue coming before God in reverence and awe but within the security and comfort of what Christ has accomplished.
