"...thou didst humble thyself before God." 2 Chron. 34:27
There's a huge difference from being humble and being humblED. Better to humble ourselves before God than to be humbled by God.
Josiah, one of Judah's godliest kings, did that very thing. He sincerely, voluntarily, and privately humbled himself before God.
Upon hearing the reading of God's law, there was an awareness of sin in his life; an awareness of God's grace that had held back deserved punishment upon that sin and an awareness of God's greatness all led Josiah to humble himself before the Lord.
