Philippians is all about self-conquering joy. Paul rejoices, for he knows the power of the gospel, not only in his life, but in the life of all who come under its influence.
Shackled in prison, Paul cannot help but rejoice to see the sovereign hand of God moving amongst the believers in Philippi.
Like so many of us, life was becoming difficult, and they were perhaps thinking about giving up their partnership with Paul for the proclamation of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.
Here Paul the shepherd-apostle comforts them, and us, with some of the greatest words of encouragment that we will ever need, not only to get by in this life, but to live victoriously in the face of persecution.
Here Paul shows us not only what a grace sandwich looks like, but also lets us have a bite to taste how refreshing God's keeping power of grace can actually be.
