Asking questions is the foundation of our educational experience. If you don't ask, you'll never learn. Sometimes a teacher will ask rhetorical questions designed to make his students think rather than respond verbally. Paul had a lot of questions on his mind regarding the believers in Galatia. He was dumbfounded over how quickly they had deserted the gospel truth to embrace the false teaching that salvation is by doing the works of the law rather than by God's grace through faith in Christ. So, after defending his own ministry and message in chapters 1-2, Paul turns to the Galatians and asks them four questions: Who or what caused your spiritual defection? Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith? How were you saved? Having begun in the Spirit are you now being made perfect by the flesh? How is your faith completed-- by your works or by faith? And what about suffering for Christ? Have you suffered so many things in vain-- if indeed it was in vain. The truth is that they were led astray by a combination of spiritual laziness and false teachers. The truth is that they received the Holy Spirit by faith at the moment of their salvation. The truth is that what God started in them He is going to finish. The truth is that true believers persevere and that suffering is not in vain in the Lord. Paul is hopeful of better things for them. The encouragement for all of us is to ground what we believe in God's Word, not our feelings. All of our questions are answered in Christ alone!
