There are many who do not have an ear to hear what the Spirit says to the churches. So many people today will not endure sound teaching from the Bible. Many others hear it Sunday after Sunday and remain unmoved by it. They agree with it. They approve of it. However, they have not truly received it deep into their hearts. They love for the Scriptures to show them how to be better husbands and wives ...better parents ...more successful at work and so forth. But when it comes to the eternal equity within the pages of Scripture, their ears do not hear and their eyes do not see ...their hearts do not understand. They live out their lives and gain very little by way of eternal equity.
We must be as attentive to the Spirit as any of the seven historic churches which preceded us. We are sinners in need of mercy this morning. God has mercy for us. There is nothing in the Scriptures that is not applicable to us during our present time. Our duty before God is the same now as it was in the days of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We must hear God the Holy Spirit. He spoke to these seven churches; He speaks to our church today. We must hear what the Spirit says to the churches today.
We must receive the word of God from the Spirit of God if we expect to benefit from it this morning. The Spirit of God speaks. He alone has authority this morning. His authority is delivered to us through the pages of the Scriptures. God alone will give the increase this morning. Receive the Scriptures not as the word of man this morning, but as the Word of God. There is no greater power than this. It is for those who come and worship God in Spirit and in truth.
