There are four warning signs of self-deception which we learn from Saul’s negative example. Why is it so easy for us to deceive ourselves about the state of our lives? The simple answer is that we don't spend time in the Bible. We should never say what the disciples who turned away from Jesus said in John 6: "This is a hard saying; who can understand it" (John 6.60)?
The only thing we may not be able to understand is why God commands us to do certain things and not do other things. I might not be able to fully appreciate the warnings He gives me, but I had better take heed to them. My obligation is to understand the will of God in the Word of God and then obey it. It's not up to me to judge whether or not His commands are fair or if I should obey them all the way.
